Musician – Vocalist – Composer
Linda's musical roots come by way of her influences of Woody Guthrie dust bowl songs, white Southern Gospel Music, and the indigenous music she experienced in Africa and the West Indies. Her extraordinary talents as a lyricist and musician provide her with the tools to create her musical inspirations into a wide spectrum of musical expression.
Linda's first experience in piano came about at the early age seven. Her following years were then spent training in the classical modality and earning her degree in piano. As she evolved in her profession of music she developed her own style – the one that created her special connection of emotional energy, the one that flavors her music today.
Early travels took her to Kenya, where she married her college sweetheart. Next she visited a wide range of developing countries, including the West Indies. Everywhere she lived there was music. Linda listened to the music, learned to play it and learned to sing it. She experienced the life and music of urban and sophisticated Africa - the music of Kenya, to West Indian rhythms and harmonies such as Soka, Calypso and Reggae. During her last three years in Africa she lived in such a rural community the experience was no electricity or running water. Each and every night she would listen for the famous Western Kenya drums, and, if there were celebrations, births or funerals they would play continuously throughout the night. When these drums were silent she would listen to the bells and the songs of the circumcisions, circumcisions that were performed on the young people from village to village for all to view. It was during these times in these foreign lands that she experienced and felt the anger, the frustration, and the poverty of the people around her, and she was forever changed.
Years later the marriage failed. In 1993 Linda departed Kenya while at the same time heading back to America. She returned with a heavy heart and a great deal of sadness at having been forced to leave her 9 year-old son behind. In order to cope with her loss she completed a great deal of prayer and inner work, which allowed her to release the outcome to Spirit and begin her healing. Finally in 1996, three and a half years later, her son Byron returned to America to live with her for good. These experiences of the separation from her child and what life in Africa represented for her are reflected in Mutsembi's Song .
Religion and a deep sense of spirituality have always been key elements in Linda's life. She sings a heartfelt mixture of Gospel Styles, Country, Folk, and Celtic, all of which are personified in her music. Clearly her early roots in the Christian Church, wisdom from 12-step principles, and her vast life experiences lend a particular richness to the music she provides us with today.
It has been said, “Linda's music . . . combines with lyrics based on real-life experience of forgiveness, surrender, courage, acceptance, release, and faith . . . It is a call, a deep emotional call, to growth and connection with Spirit . . . It is not for the faint-hearted."
Linda also acts as the full time Musical Director for the Musical Ministry at the Santa Rosa Church of Religious Science , where faith is a metaphysical spiritual path, believing in the Oneness of all creation.
